Much of what happens inside these institutions never gets out. Sterilization is the price that women with registered mental disabilities have to pay to avoid being locked up in more restrictive institutions. Medical staff at these state-run institutions use pseudo-science as an excuse. Coda organized an online event where we heard directly from victims of the practice in Yekaterinburg. Here are their stories.
The post Forced Sterilization in Russia’s Psychiatric Institutions appeared first on Coda Story.

As a second wave of Covid-19 cases surges behind bars, incarcerated people remain unprotected and afraid. Dino Caroselli, a 64-year-old prisoner at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York, says hardly any additional precautions have been taken to prevent a second wave of infections since the spring. Today, he and other inmates still can’t purchase masks or receive them from family members. Social distancing remains nearly impossible inside facilities and correctional staff continue to ignore guidances on wearing masks. The memory of his fellow inmate Juan Mosquero’s death from coronavirus in the spring continues to haunt him.
